Hit & run victim dies

MARQUETTE - A victim of a hit and run accident in Marquette July 4 has died as a result of her injuries.

Karin LaChapell, 42, of Marquette, succumbed to injuries suffered at the scene of the accident and was pronounced dead at Marquette General Hospital.

According to Marquette City police, LaChapell's husband, Bryan LaChapell, 39, of Marquette, was also injured in the incident. He is listed in stable condition at MGH.

Police said the two were walking east across South Front Street and Genesee Street when they were struck by a vehicle which was southbound on Front Street. Police were called to the scene at approximately 10:28 p.m. Both victims were transported to MGH.

Police said a traffic light was flashing yellow for Front Street traffic at the intersection. The vehicle did not stop at the scene.

The incident is being treated as a hit and run/failure to stop and an investigation is ongoing.

Marquette City Detective Lt. Michael Waise said anyone with information about the incident should come forward.

"We are looking for information on it," he said. "Any help we can get from witnesses or the public would be greatly appreciated. We've followed up on several leads and we have several more to follow up on, but we can always use more."

Police are urging anyone who has information regarding the incident to contact Waise or Detective Sgt. Michael Kohler at 228-0400.
