AAUW scholarship winners announced

IRON MOUNTAIN - The Iron Mountain-Kingsford Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) hosted its scholarship winner evening for 2012 recently at the Chippewa Club in Iron Mountain.

AAUW offers several scholarships including the Hoeffler Scholarship, for the study of arts and communication; Traditional Scholarship, awarded to local high school senior female; and Non-Traditional Scholarship, awarded to a non-traditional student.

The 2012 local Hoeffler Scholarship winner was Evan Kruppstadt. He is the son of Adam and Christine Kruppstadt and graduated from Kingsford High School. Kruppstadt will attend Carroll University in the fall and plans to double major in biology and music.

The 2012 local Traditional Scholarship winners were Erin Dreher, Melissa Scholke, and Grace VanLaanen.

Dreher is the daughter of Danny and Janice Ellis and graduated from Kingsford High School. She plans to attend the University of Michigan in the fall and will major in biology/pre-med.

Scholke is the daughter of Michael and Delores Scholke and graduated from Kingsford High School. She will attend the University of Michigan in the fall and major in biology/pre-med.

VanLaanen is the daughter of Jeffry and Ellen VanLaanen and graduated from Iron Mountain High School. She will attend Hillsdale College in the fall and is currently undecided on her major.

AAUW is a nationally recognized non-profit organization whose mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education and research.

The local chapter of AAUW offers its members opportunities to network and develop new friendships by sponsoring regularly held social and fundraising events.

The local chapter is especially committed to promoting community volunteerism and post-high school education by offering scholarship opportunities to area women, so that they may attend the two or four year college or university of their choice.
