Last of 3 fugitives in Detroit drug case captured

DETROIT (AP) — Authorities in Missouri used a stun gun to capture the last fugitive in a Detroit drug case, after he and two accomplices didn't appear in court to hear the guilty verdicts against them, federal officials said Thursday.

Earnest Proge Jr., 38, was captured Wednesday in the St. Louis area after a tip he was staying with an acquaintance, the U.S. Marshals Service said. He was spotted in the backyard of a home but fled inside, the marshals said.

Marshals from the agency's St. Louis office found Proge hiding in the basement and they said he resisted arrest, prompting them to subdue him with a stun gun. He's being held in Missouri pending extradition to Detroit.

"Today, we can say that we did our job, now the courts can finish theirs," Robert M. Grubbs, U.S. marshal for the Eastern District of Michigan, said in a statement.

The Associated Press sent a message seeking comment to Proge's lawyer.

The marshals said Proge was found with about $7,000 in cash. He and two others were free on bond when they were expected at court May 12.

The jury convicted them of drug conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy charges in a case involving the trafficking of heroin, cocaine and marijuana. They could face sentences of life in prison.

Carlos Powell, 39, was captured the night of June 4 in the St. Louis, Missouri, area and his brother Eric Powell, 36, was arrested at the same time near Atlanta, Georgia. Both also are being held pending extradition to Detroit.

Carlos Powell was carrying about $750,000 and a gun, and his brother also had a large amount of cash, the agency said.

Federal prosecutors said the drug ring operated from 2006 to 2010. More than $21 million was seized, along with luxury cars.
