DETROIT - The 2009 Michigan Associated Press Editorial Association awards will be presented on Saturday in Lansing.

Theresa Peterson of The Daily News won the top news photo award in Division 1 (newspapers up to 15,000 circulation).

Peterson's "Bird Feeder Bear" photograph won first place for news pictures and was named the sweepstakes winner as the best photograph in all categories.

The photograph, published June 22, shows a bear balancing on its hind legs to reach up to a feeder as a Kingsford Public Safety officer observes.

The Daily News web site, www.ironmountaindailynews.com, was also recognized, earning a third place award in Division 1 for best web site.

Previously, in the Michigan Press Association Better Newspaper Contest, The Daily News received honorable mention in spot news stories for Lisa Hoffmann's reporting on the Menominee River train bridge shootings.
