KHS-O, Kiwanis work together in fund-raiser
KINGSFORD - The Kingsford High School Outreach (KHS-O) has taken on the Costumes for Cancer fund-raiser for the second time this year, with the help of Trisha Peterson and Brenda Johnson of the local Kiwanis Club.
The group placed collection bins for used costumes in all buildings at Kingsford Schools, as well as in all local First National Bank branches, and at The Drug Store. The Costume Shoppe in Iron Mountain was also a major contributor of new masks and costumes for this event. The costumes were then resold at the Midtown Mall and again at Recreation Lanes this during a community craft show.
"Last year we sold just enough to purchase storage a tote. This year, with a little tweaking, the fund-raiser turned out to be a huge success, with proceeds grossing $300," says Nancy Jayne, KHS-O volunteer adviser.
The donation will be made to the Dickinson County Cancer Unit, which serves the needs of local community members who are battling cancer.
Collection bins will be placed outside of the storefront utilized for the original sale in the Midtown Mall the week following Halloween.
"We hope to boost our collection and save people the hassle of storage by collecting immediately following the holiday," Jayne added.
KHS-O is a group of students, who communicate primarily via e-mail, who are interested in volunteering to better the community. Students may join the list by e-mailing Jayne at jayne.n@mivu.org.
