Kingsford, Forest Park seek district football crowns
Big Rapids to challenge Flivv defenseBy BURT ANGELI, Sports Editor
KINGSFORD - Big Rapids and multi-threat Forrest Dorman will provide the latest challenge for the Kingsford Flivver defense.
Kingsford (8-2) and Big Rapids (9-1) will clash at 1 p.m. Saturday at Flivver Field in a Division 4 district championship.
Dorman (5-10,180), running out of Big Rapids' spread offense, gained 126 yards on 20 carries when the Cardinals clubbed the Fremont Packers 40-7 in a rainy pre-district.
But the senior can also throw, connecting for 868 yards and nine touchdowns this season.
"Dorman is a big time quarterback," said Flivver coach Chris Hofer. "He's a runner and a pretty good thrower, but he beats you with his feet.
"We have to find a way to slow him down."
Dorman has weapons in junior back Justin Currie (6-2, 185), who garnered 136 of Big Rapids' 320 rushing yards against Fremont, and prime receiver Nick Breen.
"Those backs are good," Hofer noted.
Big Rapids runs what Hofer describes as a "little different version" of a spread offense.
"They run some different formations with a lot of sweeps," Hofer said. "They direct snap to Dorman and get him out on the perimeter."
Nate Hamel (6-3, 250) stands out in the line.
"They're pretty good up front," Hofer said. "They're a good-size team with pretty good players.
"We have our work cut out for us."
Middle linebacker Mike Peterson (5-9, 175), Dorman and Currie are defensive leaders.
In the pre-district, Big Rapids registered seven tackles for loss and five turnovers with linebacker Tyler Parsley (10 tackles, sack) playing a big role.
"There is not a group of boys out there who deserves this more," Big Rapids third-year coach Mitch Cumings told the Big Rapids Pioneer. "We asked them to invest and sacrifice and they've done the things they needed to do to be here.
"Hats off to our boys, they played an outstanding football game."
Kingsford has not yielded more than a touchdown in each of the past seven games.
"They are very aggressive, they are going to come after you," Cumings said of the Flivvers. "We want try to control the tempo and expose their weaknesses with our strengths."Winston Larson rushed for 107 yards and three touchdowns in the Flivvers' 28-6 pre-district win over Cheboygan.
"They are trying to get numbers to the point of attack," Cumings said. "You have to be ready to buckle up and be ready to take some hits.
"They are going to hit you for four quarters and you have to be ready to hit back for four quarters."
Kingsford-Big Rapids winner faces Stanton Central Montcalm (7-3) 53.667 or Saginaw Swan Valley (8-2) for the regional title.
"At this point of the season there are 16 teams left and they wouldn't be here if they didn't block and tackle and do it very well," Cumings said. "We just have to be better."
