Order should be overturned

POSTED: November 5, 2009

EDITOR:As a former member of the Michigan Commission of Agriculture for seven plus years, it puzzles me why Gov. Jennifer Granholm has issued an executive order that erodes the successful and time-tested commission style of government for the Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA).

I had the honor of serving on the commission and witnessed first hand how the commission style provides what citizens want from government: transparency, accountability, responsiveness, an effective outlet for public input. A culture focused on problem-solving not partisan wrangling. The governor's order will undo all this.

The MDA touches everyone's lives daily because we all eat and rely on fiber and fuel. A commission style of government has served the agriculture industry since 1921. There is no need to change something that has worked so well for so many years, especially now when an industry employs a million residents and has grown at a rate five times faster than the general economy.

The governor could rescind or revise her order but that seems unlikely. That is why the Legislature needs to overturn this ill-advised order.

They’re probably positioning them self to implement the National Animal Identification System like Wisconsin did. Federal NAIS was defeated as un-constitutional but the USDA bribed Wisconsin ($35mil) to be the first state to mandate the NAIS at the state level. “Premises Id” is stage 1 of NAIS. Wisconsin’s dept of ag was given the power of search and seizure without a warrant, surveillance of private property, and power to fine or jail anyone who houses an animal who doesn’t register with the government. I could see how a commission could get in the way of agricultural takeover. You would not be able to mandate a program like the NAIS if small farmers had any input, it can only be done by force. The worst thing you could do in their eyes is grow and raise your own food tax free and live self sufficiently without total reliance on society and big agri business for every meal. “He who controls your bread basket controls your destiny”

Before you comment on something please try to find out a little bit about the subject. The MDA actually makes money for the State. This is just more Granholm Job Killing.

Granholm doesn't want to cut the program or save money. She wants to take control of it. There is a good article from "AgriNotes and News" that pretty well outlines what this is about.

Here’s a pattern that I’m seeing which I don’t understand. It’s seems to me that the same people who gripe about “big government” are also the same people that are first to pitch-a-fit when a big government program is threatened with cuts or elimination. You either want government spending cut down or you don’t! You can’t have it both ways!

What it really seems to boil down to is this: If your party does it, it’s a good move. If the other party is doing it, it’s evil and will hurt the people.

Commission style governance limits Government central control. A Liberal Governor has a big problem with something they cannot directly control. That is why Granholm has to do away with it. I'm just surprised it took her this long.
