Spread Eagle man awaits charges in U.S. 2 crash
By NIKKI YOUNK, Staff WriterFLORENCE, Wis. - Florence County Sheriff Jeff Rickaby has released additional details about a hit and run accident that occurred in Spread Eagle, Wis. on Friday evening.
Rickaby said that Denise and Gary Roman of Iron River were traveling west on U.S. near the Spread Eagle Club when a second vehicle operated by 22-year-old Kyle Frendewey of Spread Eagle struck them from behind.
Frendewey was driving while impaired by alcohol at the time of the accident, said Rickaby.
Rickaby added that Frendewey was traveling at a high rate of speed and both vehicles were heavily damaged.
However, Frendewey was able to continue driving west on U.S. 2 to Lake Ellwood Road. When the vehicle stopped, Frendewey fled the scene on foot, said Rickaby.
Rickaby reported that a Department of Natural Resources conservation warden located the vehicle after hearing the 911 call.
Florence County Sheriff Deputy Rob Steber found Frendewey approximately one-half mile away from the vehicle.
Frendewey attempted to hide from Deputy Steber, but he was eventually apprehended, said Rickaby.
Frendewey was transported to Dickinson County Hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained in the accident, said Rickaby.
Denise and Gary Roman were not injured.
Frendewey was lodged in the Florence County Jail pending charges.
