Council member ousted from committee

IRON MOUNTAIN -- A member of the Iron Mountain City Council was removed from the collective bargaining committee Monday night by a vote of 5-2.

Councilman Dan Burke and Mayor Jeff VanLaanen were opposed to the motion to remove Burke from the committee, which he has been a member of along with council members Bruce Rosen and Ted Corombos.

The issue was added to the council agenda by Rosen for action on an alleged violation of the collective bargaining process.

Rosen noted that Burke's re-election article in The Daily News on Saturday said that other members of the committee were looking to layoff a police officer.

"That is a clear violation of collective bargaining and has never been disclosed," Rosen said.

The near impossible has happened. I agree with nunya on something. Regionalization of police departments should definitely be considered.

A whole bunch of fiefdoms will fight it tooth and nail, you canbe sure of that.

In my humble opinion, members of any negotiating committee have a lawyer-client kind of relationship. Lawyers don't go around spouting details of their conversations with clients. Negotiating committee members on both sides do the best they can and eventually present an offer that both sides agree to take back to their respective factions.

Each side then votes on whether to accept or reject. In this case, the City Council would go into executive session and the police would poll their members.

In the interim, neither side discusses it with the public. Burke was ousted for violating his legal responsibility to remain publicly silent.

Every other contention discussed here is mere noise to avoid the real reason for the ouster.

The Police Officers have been nice enough to sit and listen to the city about current issues in reference to fighting fires, NOT NEGOTIATE. These issues were caused when the current city council, Bruce Rosen included signed a contract with the Fire Department that HIRED BACK a full time firefighter and a bunch of part time firefighters. These new hires are to take the place of the police officers who are suppose to be fighting fires per their contract. The police officers have a contract until 2012. Talk about putting the cart before the horse that is what this current city council did.

Here is the truth. There is no negotiations so Burke can say what he wants. The police officers have a CLOSED and BINDING CONTRACT

It's not about being honest or dishonest. You don't go public in the midst of negotiations. It's just not how its done. That's not just a City of Iron Mountain thing. If you get the public involved in the middle of negotiations, you are going to have a more difficult time getting through the process. Aren’t union negotiations enough of a pain without throwing a wrench into that mess?

Typical straightforward(yeah right) political move by Rosen the day before the election...just more proof of just how alike the "new" council and the old council are. The "new" ones are worse..they PRETEND they are honest.

Mr. Burke, Good Job, at least somebody was being honest there. The fire department has been a black hole for the city checkbook for how long now and the city wants to layoff police, looks like we have some real smart people running our local government. At what point will the city realize the fire department is wasting the taxpayers money with overtime when there are trained police officers on duty, they get paid to sleep......WOW, where do I sign up!

Burke is the stump of all stumps. Noone can show us one idea he has come up with in four years. He's quite adept at lying, though, as his re-election article proved.

One council member asked for a show of hands of council members who are in favor of a tax increase as Burke indicated in his letter was actually a majority. Not one hand went up. Burke was mute when asked about that lie.

Rosen was right. Burke broke the "rules of confidentiality" that Negotiations Committee members are duty bound to keep - by law.

Third Ward voters have a clear choice. It's between an accomplished, respected professional engineer, Colin Jacobetti, or a stump who now fills candy machines after getting fired from three jos in the last four years. Shouldn't be too tough.

How many ways are there to define "Boring", because this article surely fits one of them.

However....must be true. Because Rosen didn't deny it .These 'new" council members are as big of deceipts as the ones they replaced.
