Why does the Daily News keep publishing Speak Out articles that people ramble about what they do not know? I overheard two people at Walmart speaking about the national guard working at the animal shelter and that they might not be able to continue assisting there because of a speakout column talking bad about the shelter. The troops are using that as a training opportunity and helping the community at the same time. These folks are going to run this equipment regardless, the shelter or a training location digging a ditch and covering it up, why not let them do something useful? It is a shame that because of one article the national guard can't help there anymore. Daily News, please think before you publish such hideous articles. The troops were doing something they could see and be proud of instead of while helping people out(the community) instead of just digging dirt.

So Granholm says that there is no more money to cut from the budget. Our schools are now under funded, roads more falling apart than good, and we still spend that $85,000,000 on incarcerating marijuana offenders that could go to the schools.

There are no jobs anywhere where one can sustain themselves. We ARE heading to the "Great Depression II".

well keep looking, I know it gets frustrating but one of these days you'll be in the right place at the right time. I started looking for a part time job 2 weeks, had a job interview and got hired on the spot.

Fordgirl- When I say my husband has a great job. The pay is okay just that it is steady. We have three children and yes, working and helping to support my family is a very big deal for me. The other person that recieved the position over me, her husband is a business owner and that (I believe), is the sole reason for her getting the position. I have sent so many resume's out and have only had 3 interviews. Just recently I had an interview and did not get the position but they were kind enough to inform me. That means a lot.

To the writer of "Woodburners Beware". When you vote for a public offficial you give that person the "Go Ahead" to vote on whatever he or she thinks is right. It is out of your hands so relax and go fishing instead of trying to "Fix It".

Where sis half of these people get their drivers license? From a cracker Jack's box? Unbelievable... directional lights must be optional on a lot of these more expensive vehicles.. And what's with dog's on the drivers laps? Also Hang UP and DRIVE!!! No wonder insurance cost so much.

ferfie5, you say your husband has a great job.. so whats the problem? There are more people that don't have a job period. If I were to be looking for an employee, I would more likely choice the one who is unemployed and with no other income.

So wheres the uproar about GAD's decision to stop recycling glass? How is it that Florence and Niagara have curbside recycling that picks up glass, by GAD! I have also heard from different people that GAD seems to be using multiple reasons for why they no longer take glass. From it doesn't make any money, no one will come and take it. Any reporting on the issue? Why don't we petition for curbside? I and many others would pay the $14 dollars extra a month just like Florence and Niagara. I'm sure most of you don't care anyway, from what I have seen, but there are many people who do.

When people with college degrees are competing with people with high school diplomas for jobs her in the UP. The lowest paid will usually win.

Please take the time tomorrow - 6-6-09 to thank a Veteran if you happen upon one - and - if you're fortunate enough to be able to spend time with a WWII Veteran - please know that encounters such as these are few and far between - their numbers are dwindling rapidly. The memories these folks have to share are truly inspiring and eye opening. At the Iron Mountain Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center - tomorrow - there will be a special Welcome Home Celebration and acknowledgement of our Veterans of all eras. If possible - please stop by - even for a moment.

Oh sure, I do agree that there are jobs out there. Keep in mind that never did I say there wasn't. I do admit I am a bit picky about the job I want. I have a family (3 young boys to be specific), it is important to me to be home at night for my family. However, at the same time I have to have a job that will not cost me to work (day care and gas cost especially these days). These things are very important to me. No job is worth taking my time from my family. That is why I went to college, let's face it, without an education those kind of jobs are hard to come by. I just graduated with my assoc. in feb but do to lack of work I am returning to the bach program I start June 8. Maybe hings will come together soon.

There are jobs out there - maybe not fantastic jobs or even good jobs - but there's ALWAYS work to be done and always a need for someone to do it. If you're seriously in need of employment - don't tell me or anyone else there's 'nothing out there'. Ross Perot - love him or hate him - said it best in the 92 Presidential Race with his whacky pie charts and stats from underneath the pillow - he said 'If I was out of work and my family was in need and I had been a broker, a banker, what have you - and the only work available that paid anything at all was a sausage maker job - I'd become a sausage maker - a broom pushing job? You bet - I'd be the best*****broom pusher anyone ever saw - I'd do it for my family - not for me or anyone else'. That's the attitude you must adopt in a tough economy. When this logic fits your plan - you'll get there.

dagolfnut & Muttster- I definently have heard of people suffering in the area and people getting the job that they should have gotten. I always do a follow up with everyone that I send resumes and I am very organized so I have kept a log of all people that I have applied to and when my follow ups took place. I also send a "Thank You" note after all interviews. The most upsetting thing about the whole thing is the failure to return my phone call is unfair. Muttster- you seem to be a businessman, I am sure you atleast return the phone calls. The most important thing is that I have excellent recommendations and great work ethic. If things do not change I will be forced to move but I would prefer to have my kids in a smaller community. Plus My husband has a great job at a local business. I just want to be given a chance, I know that any company would be proud to have me on their team. Maybe the right job is out there, I just haven't found it yet. I think the SASE will help i

muttster, not a conspiracy theorist, just many, many years in the local job market. Jaded...maybe, defiantly cynical that's for sure. Maybe your particular profession isn't that way, but Ive seen it too many times in my career.

Hey - maybe it is a good practice to follow up with folks from a personal perspective - but - my HR folks have a lot to do - and - if you don't send the 100% correct message - it can get muddy. Its your job as a potential employee to follow up - perhaps you;re missing the point - if you're more tenacious than the next person - you get the nod. I do feel you make a good point - and, no - I'm not just rying to argue ;) No charge for the 'tip'! Good Luck

Muttster- That is GREAT advice! I seriously will do that, and is something I would have never considered. I must disagree with you in regards to employers not responding. I have been in the human resource before and that is the professional rule of thumb, always contact people.

I would send a self addressed stamped envelope along with your resume - it'll do two things - offer them an easy out for you - and - make you stand out. If you're sending 10-15 resumes a week - it really is only a matter of time before you strike proverbial gold. Further - yes - you are whining. It's ok to whine if it has purpose - but - you feel you deserve something for nothing. You were offered an interview - no response is your response. That's the rule of the jungle. Get over it and keep moving. Try the SASE with the resume though - at least it’s one more step you’re taking - remember - employers are holding all of the cards right now - believe me - they know it. Good luck - seriously - but don’t feel offended if you're not on top of the bosses list of people to get a hold of!

Muttster- First off I would not classify my statements as whining. I do bring a great attitude to the table, and if someone is more qualified for the position then congrats to them. I can honestly say I send out 10-15 resumes per week, (some weeks, a lot less). Rest assured I am not giving up, the thing that upsets me, is the failure of response. In the last year I have sent over 100 copies of my resume, I have had 3 interviews (two hires-but declined the positions due to wanting me to pay for classes i.e. insurance) I am working for the other but only 15 hrs/month. And 1 letter. These businesses need to respond.

Just a question and a bit o' advice for ya - take it for what its worht - I don't need or expect a reply... What, exactly, do you feel a prospective employer owes you? Seriously - you need to come to the table PREPARED. If you do not - you will not be hired - no matter how much you feel you deserve to be. Sorry, pal - everyone’s feeling the pinch and there is a serious surplus of qualified folks out there neck-and neck for the few jobs there are available. Listening to the jaded diatribes of an anonymous conspiracy theorist will only make this tougher on you than it already is. If you’re qualified, you're prepared, you interview well - it's only a matter of time. Give up and you get what you deserve. Little insight for you: I wouldn’t hire you based on your whiny attitude – so don’t expect a lot of resume requests from what is displayed here. But, who knows - maybe you'll do better at interviewing than you do at posting on a second rate newspaper blather mill...
