Deadline Monday for welding program
IRON MOUNTAIN - Welders are in demand in Dickinson County.
A training course to fill vacant positions is scheduled to begin July 14 - the second such program to be offered.
Three employers recently partnered with The Job Force Board, M-TEC at Bay College and the Dickinson-Iron Intermediate School District to launch the welding training program. Upon successful completion of a three-week course, 12 graduates were placed at the participating companies as welders.
Persons interested in the second round of training should contact Michigan Works! at (906) 774-3647 by Monday, July 7.
Participating businesses are Boss Snowplow of Iron Mountain, Loadmaster of Norway and Northwoods Manufacturing of Kingsford.
The course is offered through the Upper Peninsula Regional Industrial Manufacturing Skills Alliance (RSA).
Successful candidates will be identified through a process of skills assessments provided by Michigan Works! human resource specialists and pre-interviews with company representatives.
Training will be held at the Dickinson-Iron Intermediate School District in partnership with M-TEC.
"This process has worked very well for all three companies," said Jeff Pearson of Northwoods Manufacturing. "This is an excellent way for us to work as RSA members with our educational partners and Michigan Works! to fill open positions with qualified workers."
A ceremony was held Friday, June 27, to honor the first 12 graduates.
Patrick Kennedy, executive dean for Bay College's West Campus, thanked Pearson as well as Paul Dawson of Loadmaster and Dan Davis of Boss Snowplow for their dedication to the project.
Kennedy also thanked them "in advance for their continued support of this and other trainings to follow."
