A free fishing weekend will take place June 7-8 in both Michigan and Wisconsin.
For these two days only, residents and non-residents alike can fish without purchasing a fishing license, though all other regulations that govern fishing still apply.
“Fishing is a great way to connect with nature,” said Michigan Department of Natural Resources Director Becky Humphries. “I encourage Michigan residents and visitors to get out and discover the many rewards associated with fishing.”
In celebration of free fishing weekend, the Ottawa National Forest is hosting an exciting, fun-filled day of fishing for kids and their families. Community youngsters are invited to come out to the Lake Ottawa campground in Iron County with their fishing poles, tackle boxes and bait to take part in the Ottawa National Forest’s Kids Free Fishing Derby from 7 a.m. to noon on Sunday, June 8.
Every child fishing at the derby will receive a prize for participation. In addition to free fishing, the day will also feature prize drawings and a casting contest.
Youngsters are encouraged to register at the lake when they arrive. All fishing will be done from shore or off of the fishing pier at the campground and all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Similar events will be held in the Bessemer Ranger District at Henry Lake Campground from 8 a.m. to noon (Central time) Saturday, June 7, and in the Ontonagon Ranger District at Ontonagon Marina from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Eastern time), also on Saturday, June 7.
The Hiawatha National Forest will once again be sponsoring “Kids Fishing Day” on Saturday, June 7 at Camp 7 Lake Campground in Schoolcraft County from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. (Eastern time).
A number of other state parks will hold special events in conjunction with Free Fishing Weekend. For a list of events, go to www.michigan.gov/dnr and click on “Fishing”, then click on the link for “Free Fishing Weekend.”
