IRON MOUNTAIN — Fishing has taken a back seat to Michigan’s firearm deer opener, which is Sunday. Hunters have arrived in earnest, but prevailing opinion seems to be that the season might be a struggle. “I have a feeling it’s going to be a down year for many,” reported Don Ciochetto at the Sport Shop in Iron River. “There’s plenty of hunters around though.” Tom Bean at Crystal Bait in Crystal Falls said very little fishing was being reported as most were gearing up for the deer opener. “We were getting a few reports of walleye action on the Menominee,” mentioned Dean Lindblom at Country Bait and Tackle in Iron Mountain. “Fishermen were also buying fatheads and pike suckers and hitting lower Peavy and the hydraulics.” John Grier at Whispering Pines Outpost in Breitung Township noticed a “fair amount” of non-resident hunters arriving this week. “I had a guy who took a nine-pointer with his bow this week,” he added. “People are starting to see deer moving around more.
