Engineering work set to begin on Iron Mountain Bat Cave Trail

IRON MOUNTAIN — City council approval was given at Monday’s meeting to incur engineering costs associated with the Bat Cave Trail project. The city has learned that the project was being funded by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund Program. The grant totals $158,400 and the total project is $230,000 including in-kind work by the city and private contributions. Acting City Manager Jordan Stanchina noted that the only way to have the project completed in 2009 is to get started on the engineering now. He added that the engineering costs are 100 percent paid for by the grant and no city funds are involved. Mayor Jeff VanLaanen asked when the city was going to get the bill for this expenditure. “The engineering firm will hold it until we receive the funds from the state on the project,” Stanchina said.
