Izzo in line for Olympics?
May 16, 2012 - Burt Angeli
With Mike Krzyzewski announcing his departure as head coach of the U.S. men's basketball team, there’s talk of Iron Mountain’s Tommy Izzo taking over.
“USA Basketball needs a proven winner who has energy, time, cache, media savvy and (most important) expertise in winning tournament games with a quick turnaround,” Michael Rosenberg of the Detroit Free Press observed.
That seems to fit Izzo, Michigan State’s highly-successful coach.
"I'm not sure I would even have a shot at it, to be honest with you," Izzo told Rosenberg. "I would think everybody would be interested. That's always been a dream and goal of mine. But I think they'll go with a pro coach, I really do."
Rosenberg stated, “If USA Basketball turns to the college ranks, Izzo is not just a candidate. He may be the best candidate.”
Izzo, apparently, would be happy with any job serving the country.
"I might be interested in being the ball boy. I swear to you."
Rosenberg concluded, “Tom Izzo could do the job. And he wants the job. The tricky part is actually getting the job.”
