Good news—bad news

May 7, 2012 - Blaine Hyska
We just completed a major murder trial in Iron County.

A Kingsford man was convicted of killing a Stambaugh Township woman.

I’ve discussed the “good news” versus “bad news” in the past. It’s a common complaint leveled against the news business.

As the trial progressed in Iron County, we needed to send a reporter to Crystal Falls to cover it. That meant shuffling jobs in the Iron Mountain office, especially with vacations starting.

As it happens, I assumed the police call duties one morning during the trial. It’s a task I rather enjoy, talking to local law enforcement officers. Anyway, during the police calls, one police officer and I began talking about the trial, and what we thought the outcome be.

Also discussed was the “good news” versus “bad news” thing. Some people might view trial coverage as “bad news.”

I do not. Don't get me wrong. There is no doubt that crime is "bad." But a trial means the system is working.

And what better news can there be in a town than a killer being taken off the streets?

Local law enforcement did their job and our community is now safer.
