Happy St. Nicholas Day
December 6, 2011 - Nikki Younk
For those of you unfortunate enough to not know what St. Nicholas Day is, allow me to let you in on the secret. On Dec. 6, St. Nicholas visits homes and leaves candy and toys in the shoes of good children, and coal in the shoes of bad children. It's quite a popular holiday in Europe, but fairly unknown here in the states.
My family, for some strange reason, has always celebrated this holiday. Every Dec. 6, my mother would buy a paper bag or two full of candy, snack foods, Christmas ornaments, and sometimes, a Christmas movie, then hide it somewhere in the house. When my sister, brother, and I weren't looking, she would knock loudly on the door. That was our cue to begin searching. It was an awesome combination of Christmas and Easter traditions.
Even though most of you probably don't celebrate this holiday, I wish you a happy St. Nicholas Day all the same.
