Mountaineers vs Flivvers. Tight Match?

October 6, 2011 - Theresa Proudfit
The Iron Mountain Mountaineers vs Kingsford Flivvers Saturday at Flivver Field! By far my favorite game of the season. Fall colors are at their peak, It's supposed to be sunny and 80 degrees and it's my birthday! What could be better? Well a win for the Mountaineers of course.

The 87th match up begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday and I am stoked. Right now the Mountaineers lead the series 44-39 with 3 scoreless ties. Three scoreless ties. That is a perfect example of how tight the Mountaineer/Flivver battle can be. A couple other examples; 2009 — IM, 7-0, 2008 — IM, 21-20, 1999 — IM, 26-20, 1994 — IM, 20-19.

We have also seen our share of blowouts. In 2007 Kingsford won, 47-0 and although I wasn't around for it, back in 1925 the Mountaineers took out the Flivvers with a whopping score of 69-0. I don't expect to see that kind of a win for Iron Mountain tomorrow, but I do expect to see a win. Last year I bet my money on the Mountaineers and they did it 27-16.

Iron Mountain has the best record. They have gone 6-0 so far. Kingsford is 3-3. If you look at the stats it should be a no brainer. That's what scares me. Whoever wants it the most, that's who gets it. Flivvers need the win. The Mountaineers however are tough and I suspect they want to give me an awesome birthday present this year.

I wish both teams luck in Saturday's game. I think its going to be a tight one. Go Mountaineers!
