Did you hear it?
July 1, 2011 - Linda Lobeck
Where were you when the siren went off Friday in Iron Mountain?
I was on my way to lunch and I heard it, but I'm not sure how loud it was being heard in the farther reaches of the city. Some upgrades may need to be made to the siren in order for it to be louder, but lets remember, it hasn't been sounded in 18 years.
Although it was only a test, it’s reassuring to see that the city fire department is at least researching it to see if it is possible.
A discussion at a recent city council meeting talked about the possible liability the city would have if not everyone heard it — including the people who are in their homes with their televisions blaring.
Let’s be reasonable, no one expects that to happen. I think it’s a great idea just to work on making it heard throughout the city for people who are outside. In the summer time, a lot of people are outside their homes and around town anyway.
And a warning that a tornado is coming will be greatly appreciated by everyone. It gives them time to get inside, warn neighbors that may be inside their homes, and alert handicapped or elderly people.
This would be a big improvement over what happened when the last tornado hit the area — most people had no idea it was coming. And we were fortunate that no one was injured or killed.
Kudos to the Iron Mountain Fire Department for taking the bull by the horns and checking out the warning siren!
