Extra Scuttle from Labor Day 2014

September 1, 2014 - Burt Angeli
ScuttleBu(r)t ...

Running back Elijah Holyfield, son of former heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield, scored seven touchdowns in Woodward (Ga.) Academy’s 45-13 victory over Decatur ...

From Dwight Perry, Seattle Times: “The MGM Grand's legendary ‘Lion's Share’ slot machine finally coughed up its massive jackpot after 21 years — to the tune of $2.4 million — at 1-in-20 million odds.

"So you're telling me there's a chance,’ gushed 50,000 Cubs fans in unison.” ...

Ted Moore, 87, RIP.

I’ve listened to three Packer play-by-play radio voices over the years, and Ted Moore just may be the best of them.

His 1967 Ice Bowl call of Bart Starr’s touchdown plunge stands out in his 48 years of broadcasting — “The Green Bay Packers are going to be world champions, NFL champions for the third straight year.” ...

ESPN The Magazine projects the Packers to win the NFC North with a 12-4 ledger, followed by the Bears, 9-7; Lions, 7-9, and Vikings, 4-12.

By the way, Bears pocket schedules have, finally, arrived at The Daily News. We’ve run out of Lions but that shouldn’t be a problem with the Bears ...

New to the Lambeau Field concession stand menu —  hot doughnut ice cream sandwich, 22-inch-long kielbasa and “Bratchos” with pieces of brat, cheese and fried chips.

Cedar Grove-Belgium (Wis), which dropped its season opener to Mishicot (28-14), visits North Central on Sept. 13. Rockets speedster Aaron Chier, who ran through Kingsford for 120 yards last season, caught a 50-yard TD pass against Mishicot.

Cedar Grove coach and Lake Linden grad Chris Zablocki, who has family ties to Kingsford, told the Sheboygan Press that “his team is young, and it showed in some of the team's mistakes — issues he said the team expects to learn from later in the season.”

Lake Linden Coach Andy Crouch suggested the Jets and Rockets clash ...

Mid Peninsula, unable to find enough players, has cancelled eight-man football for the past two years. The Wolverines may look to a football co-op with Rapid River for next season.

“Down the road, our numbers don’t look better. We’ll look into the co-op,” said Mid Peninsula athletic director Gray Brayak. “We’re also looking at the possibility of bringing back cross country as a varsity sport and some other things.” ...

Congratulations, I think, to Matt Richmond of the Marinette High School football team for breaking the “Big Dog” record at Scoops Sports Cafe. He consumed two foot-long hot dogs on a foot-long bun with one pound of fries, half-cup of diced onions, one pound of chili sauce, and a half-pound of nacho cheese with shredded cheddar and jalopeno peppers.

Only took him 11 minutes, 12 seconds, for the record ...

Big Ten Conference football officials make $2,700 per game ...
