Good sleeping weather

June 25, 2014 - Linda Lobeck
Although summer has officially arrived according to the calendar, someone forgot to let the Upper Peninsula know it. People I talk with are kind of split when they mention the weather. Some say they like the cooler temperatures and don’t like real hot days. And others like me just wish for some temperatures in the 80s during the day and not in the 40s at night.

With all the discussion of the lack of summer, many people have remarked that “it’s good sleeping weather.” Really, that’s all you can say to the 40 and 50 degrees we have at night? It may be saving on using your air conditioner, but you made need the heat instead.

I can just see it now, “Come to the Upper Peninsula and enjoy good sleeping weather.” That’s what the new slogan will be for promoting tourism in the U.P. A secondary promo will say, “Home of the mosquito – don’t forget your bug spray.”

That’s another problem we’ve really encountered this summer – so bad you couldn’t find any bug spray on the shelves of the local stores. For all the people who’ve said they don’t like the bats we have in the area, at least they serve a purpose in keeping the mosquito population down. It’s too bad this year that so many bats were affected by disease and died.

But regardless of the temperatures outside and the mosquitoes, Yoopers (now a real word) are a tough lot. We take advantage of any day during the summer months to get out and enjoy the outdoors. And we’re all so thankful for a few months that it’s only rain falling from the sky and not the colder white stuff.
