Sometimes luck is needed

February 20, 2014 - Marguerite Lanthier
It’s Olympic time and one of my favorite sports to watch is the skating competition. Announcers like to claim they know who is likely to win, but like in all sports even favorites can have an off day. During the new team skating event competition, a young Russian skater captivated everyone’s attention with her flexibility and flawless routines. Flash forward a week and she stumbled twice to take fifth place. Her overshadowed, fellow countryman took the gold. One of my most disappointing Olympic memories was when Michelle Kwan failed to win a gold medal. She skated so beautifully in the nationals but at the Olympics it was like she was a afraid to lose, so she skated that way. Four years later she was back hoping for redemption but it didn’t happen. She was out-skated again. Some of the greatest athletes in history don’t have Olympic medals and some of the luckiest do.
