Scuttle leftovers, Sept. 14, 2013

Former Florence High School star Kaycee Lund, the area’s premier player in the 2011 season, has been working with the Bobcats during the week and taking classes on the weekend.

“That’s huge to have a helper,” Florence Coach Trudy Rochon said ...

Hope I can stay awake for tonight’s Wisconsin game at Arizona State (9:30 p.m., ESPN).

The Sun Devils, with a dandy quarterback in Taylor Kelly, run a spread attack. The Badgers will defend with an untested secondary (three new starters including one freshman).

Andy Baggot of the Wisconsin State Journal points out that Arizona State is 8-0 at home against Big Ten teams; Wisconsin 6-0 on Sept. 14 ...

Sounds like Iron Mountain’s Tommy Izzo is fanning the flames for the basketball season.

When the Michigan State student section sat through last Saturday’s weather delay, the Spartans coach picked up a microphone and urged them to leave.

When explaining the weather map and hazardous conditions, Izzo said the “putrid yellow reminded him of Michigan.” ...

Looked like the entire Carney-Nadeau boys basketball team was running cross country in the Kingsford Invitational on Tuesday. Just another reason why Coach Jacob Polfus’ Wolves are always so good and ready to play ...

Hard to believe that Floyd (Money) Mayweather Jr. will make at least $41 million for his fight Saturday against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez at the MGM Grand Garden.

It could be much more with a big pay-per-view turnout ...

From Minnesota Vikings middle linebacker Erin Henderson, asked by the St. Paul Pioneer Press whether he has personal goals this season: "Yeah, but I keep it personal. If they don't know your dreams, then they can't shoot 'em down." ...

From Tom (Richie) Kaeser of The EagleHerald, on Menominee scoring on its first four possessions and ripping Milwaukee Riverside 42-7: “Milwaukee may be the home of big-city basketball, but Walton Blesch Field is the proving ground of U.P. football.” ...

Bob McGinn, Milwaukee JournalSentinel’s award-winning pro football scribe from Escanaba, harped on the Green Bay Packers less-than-physical play last season. Packers coach Mike McCarthy took exception in a recent interview.

“In all honesty. I think it’s (expletive),” McCarthy told McGinn before the season opener. “There wouldn’t be a guy on that team if we didn’t think he was a physical football player. We want to be as physical as we possibly can.”

By the way, McGinn likes the Packers for a 12-4 or 11-5 record this season. “Green Bay has as good a shot as any team to win the 48th Super Bowl come February,” McGinn wrote ...

Peyton Manning’s seven TD passes in the NFL season opener matched that of Minnesota Vikings quarterback Joe Kapp.

Kapp, one of six quarterbacks to throw seven TD passes in a game, burned the Baltimore Colts in September 1969.

Kapp, still feisty at age 75, was surprised Vikings coach Bud Grant gave him the go-ahead to throw that often.

“The word ‘pass’ was a four-letter word for Bud,’’ Kapp told the St. Paul Pioneer-Press. “For Bud it was five words: Keep it on the ground. But if you threw a pass it was dangerous, and not because it might get intercepted. But because Bud would get mad.” ...

Sorry I missed this on the NFL Network. One segment had Iron Mountain’s Steve Mariucci, an NFL Network analyst, with a mastiff (dog) and monkey ...

U.S. Rep. Dan Benishek of Iron County had his name mentioned frequently on the latest episode of HBO’s “Newsroom.”

The fictional show centered on the 2012 election. His media contact failed to get back to me with a comment, and I e-mailed nicely, too ...

Aaron Rodgers’ last fumbled exchange from center? That would be week 3 of 2008 for the Packers quarterback ...
