Annual Perseid meteor shower doesn't disappoint

August 16, 2013 - Nikki Younk
I'm pleased to report that I had a successful meteor-gazing experience last weekend during the peak of the annual Perseid meteor showers.

Thankfully, the weather cooperated and there were only a few stray clouds in the sky on peak night. It could've been warmer, though.

I spotted about eight meteors over a period of 45 minutes. I say "about" because when you're staring at the night sky for that long, your eyes tend to play tricks on you. On the other hand, the longer you stargaze, the more your eyes become accustomed to the night. I guess it all evens out in the end.

Even if you missed the Perseid peak, there's still time to see some sweet shooting stars. The shower is active through Aug. 24. Get out and enjoy it!
