Packer pick tough on Tech
May 3, 2013 - Burt Angeli
Grand Valley State wide receiver Charles Johnson, one of Green Bay’s three seventh-round draft picks Saturday, burned Michigan Tech in this past season’s game at Houghton.
Johnson grabbed seven passes for 165 yards, with three going for scores in a 51-43 GVSU victory.
Northern Michigan limited Johnson to a pair of catches for 17 yards, but the Lakers romped 42-7.
Johnson (6-foot-3, 225 pounds), who ran a blistering 4.35 in the 40 during his pro day, caught 128 passes and 31 touchdowns the last two seasons.
Escanaba’s Bob McGinn, decorated pro football writer with the Milwaukee JournalSentinel, noted Johnson schooled GLIAC defensive backs who cover the 40 in a slow 4.75 time.
“Have you ever seen games in that Division II league?” McGinn wrote. “It has to be very difficult for evaluators to watch tape of Johnson work against those type corners.”
