Flivvers considered for nickname contest

Watersmeet Nimrods, with more than 16,000 votes, topped Michigan’s candidates for the USA Today High School Sports Best Mascot competition.

Goodrich Martians placed second while the Kingsford Flivvers, Ishpeming Hematites and Pershing Doughboys also drew votes.

Chicago Sun-Times columnist Rick Telander, who apparently has a summer place in the U.P., mentioned driving through Watersmeet and Bessemer (Speedboys, Speedgirls).

Telander wrote that “Illinois might have the best high school nicknames in the nation, if not the world. How about the Cobden Appleknockers? The Centralia Orphans? The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes? The Effingham Flaming Hearts?” ...
