St. Ignace won the Class D girls basketball state championship Saturday.
Twenty years ago, Iron Mountain played for the Class C title.
Coach Dennis DeMerse’s Mountaineers completed the regular season with a 16-4 record and tacked on six more wins until meeting Redford Bishop Borgess for the state crown.
Iron Mountain thumped Stephenson 44-27 for the district title.
Janell Schupp’s 24 points and eight rebounds helped the Mountaineers edge St. Ignace 43-41 for the regional championship. A pass from Shannon Pickett to Kristen Lori to Schupp provided the deciding basket.
In the quarterfinals, Schupp’s 14 points and a full-court man defense sent the Mountaineers past Elk Rapids 34-33.
Brenda Verrette drilled home 21 points as the Mountaineers romped past Howard City Tri County 67-37 in the state semifinals. DeMerse utilized a box-and-one defense in this one.
“We were better at the end of the season because we realized what we could do,” DeMerse said at the time.
Redford Bishop Borgess, behind Maxann Reese’s state-record six treys, stopped Iron Mountain, 64-41, in the finals. Schupp led the Mountaineers with 11.
Leslie Jerks, Joey Oliva and Jodi Dabb also made contributions during Iron Mountain’s state title run.
