Swagger deserved Best of Show title

February 15, 2013 - Linda Lobeck
I was a little disappointed during the best of show at the Westminster Dog Show this week. It’s not that Banana Joe wasn’t a cute little monkey face dog, but I felt that there was a greater presence of another dog.

Not that runner-up isn’t good, but really, Swagger the Old English Sheep Dog, should have taken first place. He is only 20 months old — adorable — and won the working group during the dog show.

I would agree with the announced, not taking Best of Show is like not winning the Miss America Pageant and being the runner-up.

I am not like the judges who use certain breed criteria to rate each dog being brought around the ring. My selection is based on the cuteness factor and what dog tugs at my heartstrings. Swagger certainly did as well as several dogs in the terrier group and Honor, the Bichon Frise, who won the non-sporting group.

I’ve only had three dogs in my life and they have been various sizes of poodles. Unfortunately, the dog show has the poodles shaved in a ridiculous way. It may be appropriate for show, but it certainly takes away from the cuteness factor. They are great dogs — I just wish they would do away with this type of grooming for these shows.

Most owners of poodles, like myself, do not ever think about getting our dogs groomed in this fashion. My Gracie gets groomed by Tara and looks beautiful with her puppy cut even if she’s almost 10 years-old.

Sorry Banana Joe — you’re cute, but not as good as Swagger — he’s best of show in my books!
