Jump and Roll this Weekend.

February 6, 2013 - Theresa Proudfit
Normally the week before the Pine Mountain ski jumping tournaments all I talk about is the jumpers hitting the hill on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This year my roller derby team, The Kingsford Krush, unknowingly scheduled a home bout against the Canadian team The Soonami Slammers of Sault Ste. Marie the same weekend. This is a tough one for me. It is of course one of my favorite winter activities but Ski Tournaments is also a required work day for me. I have never had an event happen the same time as ski jumps that I cared about missing. This time I'm really disappointed because I'll have to miss our first International Roller Derby Bout.

The good news for everybody else is you have the opportunity to watch two extreme sports on Saturday. First off Saturday ski jumpers from 10 different countries will compete in the 74th Bellin Health Pine Mountain Continental Cup starting at 11 a.m for the trial rounds; 12:30 p.m., opening ceremony; and 1 p.m., the official competition begins. Buttons for the jumps can be purchased for $20 before Friday at many locations including Iron Mountain-Kingsford Credit Union, Hometowne Building Supply, Woodward Bar, Super One Foods, Bimbo’s, Mayme’s, Eureka Tire, Pine Mountain Resort, Econo Foods, Northern Michigan Bank, Bob & Gerry’s and the Big 10.

The ski jumping is usually finished around 4:30 which gives you plenty of time to grab a bite to eat and head on over to the former Goodwill building in the Forward Financial mall at W8159 US 2 in Iron Mountain. Tickets for the event are $8 pre-sale from a derby girl or $10 at the door. Ages 8 and under are free. If you show your ski jump button and the price is only $5.00 at the door. What a great deal! Doors open at 5:00 p.m. Bout begins at 6:00 cst.

Please bring a chair. Proceeds from the roller derby bout will be donated to American Cancer Society. February's bout is sponsored by Coleman Engineering Company and Greenleaf's which rumor has it should be re-opening soon. The after bout party will be held at The Junction in Kingsford.
