Basketball refs under fire

January 31, 2013 - Burt Angeli
Bark River coach Matt Richer and Escanaba Daily Press sports editor Keith Shelton didn't like the officiating for the Broncos' boys basketball game with Munising.

"The reffing was terrible, not solely for us, but they got the favor mostly in the second half," Richer said after a 49-43 loss to the Mustangs.

Richer pointed to the free throw discrepancy — 27 Munising, 4 Bark River — as one example of the poor officiating.

Shelton indicated the officials missed obvious calls right in front of them.

"The officials marred this game," Shelton wrote. "They stole victory right out of the hands of the Bark River-Harris Broncos, who played the most inspired basketball I've seen them play in my three years here."

Shelton plans to contact the MHSAA about the "travesty," and urges fans to do the same.

He did not name the Marquette County officiating trio in his story, but they are highly regarded by many. Wish I had been there to form my own opinion.
