Star QB stood out in basketball

January 22, 2013 - Burt Angeli
Colin Kaepernick’s basketball play impressed his future college football team.

Kaepernick, who quarterbacked the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl, played football and basketball at John H. Pitman High School in Turlock, Calif.

Nevada assistant coach and lead recruiter Barry Sacks knew he wanted Kaepernick after watching him play basketball.

"For those young men who do that, basketball can be a great dictator of competitiveness, grittiness, all the intangibles along with his athleticism," Sacks told Newsday. "I was watching a lot of basketball games with football players."

Area high school basketball players with college football aspirations should pay attention to Kaepernick’s situation. There’s also been a players around here over the years who cemented their college football scholarships after displaying their basketball efforts.
