Baby it's cold outside
January 17, 2013 - Linda Lobeck
The older I get the less I am able to or want to adapt to below zero temperatures. And just hearing about the cold front moving in from Canada has me shivering.
I can’t really complain about the winter so far this year, but the last couple of days have been brisk like a slap of reality. I have to remind myself that dealing with below zero wind chills is something we Yoopers have always dealt with as a fact of life.
Sounding like my parents now, I can remember walking in below zero temperatures to get to school and other activities when I was a kid. And while in college, I would walk across campus at Northern Michigan University with the wind coming off of Lake Superior without batting an eye.
Maybe living in what is called the ‘banana belt’ for the past 29 years has made me soft. I’ve gotten used to less snow and definitely no lake effect weather. I can truly appreciate a milder winter. With this year definitely warmer, a sudden change like this makes me want to hibernate in my house and not go out.
Wind chills of 20 below are a real concern for animals as well as humans. We need to be reminded to limit time spent outdoors and dress appropriately in layers.
I guess that since it’s well into January now and it staying lighter outside to nearly 5 p.m., we can say that spring is just around the corner!
