End of the World? End of an Era.

December 21, 2012 - Theresa Proudfit
The Mayan Calendar has been a hot topic this week. Some say the calendar predicts the end of the world and others just an end of an era. I'm going with the end of an era scenario.

My world has changed this year. After losing my grandfather in June and having his house sold in October I really am feeling the end of an era.

My grandparents house was our gathering place. Birthday parties, Easter, Memorial Day, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve everyone was always together on Cherry Street. My grandmother orchestrated everything when she was alive. Always tons of food and drink, smear playing and pool games, laughter and love. After losing her in 2005 we continued the traditions at Grandma's house. It was difficult at first but everyone pitched in. We knew that she wanted us all to be together. We continued holidays with Grandpa until he passed this spring. That was the end of an era.

As hard as it is to let go of those wonderful days I have to remember the end of one era is also the beginning of a new one. I'm ending this era in 2012 as an unmarried woman without children. In April of 2013 I will become a married woman blessed with an amazing husband, 3 children, a precious grandchild and fantastic new family . A new beginning to be most grateful for.

My cousins have all moved away are settling down and starting their lives. Buying new homes and starting families. All wonderful new beginnings for them too.

Holidays will never be exactly the same as when I was growing up but I will always have beautiful memories on Cherry street. I will continue some of the Peterson family traditions when I become a Proudfit and we will probably even start a few new traditions of our own.

And the Cherry Street home has a new owner. Congratulations to him. I hope his family is as blessed as we were. Our end of an era is a new beginning for them too.

Thanks to the Mayans for giving me something to reflect on this week.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Era.
