Two types of people

June 13, 2012 - Blaine Hyska
There are two types of people in the world.

There are ones who are always saying, “Did you see this YouTube?” And there are ones doing something worthy of being on YouTube.

Don’t you wish you had a nickel for every minute otherwise normal people waste watching a video of a dog wiping his behind on the carpet?

I don’t blame YouTube for child obesity, political apathy or infidelity.

I do believe this and similar internet websites contribute to the dumbing of American society.

If this is the future of our culture, we’re in deep trouble.

Watch the roadways. This is the time of year for the trekkers. I’m sure we’ll have a few in town again this year.

Every summer, we get concerned individuals bicycling, walking, hopping, crawling (take your pick) across the U.S. for some noble cause. Think save the trees, help the seals, clean air, pure water, etc., etc.

And every year, they call the newspaper and want free publicity. “Write a story about me,” they beg.

Don’t get me wrong. They all have virtuous and upstanding causes.

However, if I really believed in something — and could afford to take a summer off wandering about the country — I would get a summer job and donate the all earnings to that cause.

Be warned, trekkers. If you really want free publicity, try swimming across Lake Superior — in February.

Now that’s a story.
